This made me read Chopin's other stories at www.gutenberg.org. "Beyond the Bayou" is the most optimistic thing I have read in a long time. Children are the best psychics out there - they can feel when their parents are distressed and they start reacting the same way. So yes, a relaxed mother who allowed herself some pampering is more welcomed by her children, than a mom, who's stressed and spills her anger on kids.
