I wonder if this day made her a happier person or if it only made her long for things she couldn't have any more. Hopefully, having these stockings somewhere in her drawer to remind her of that day brightened her life a bit.
Thank you for sharing this story. This made me read Chopin's other stories at www.gutenberg.org. "Beyond the Bayou" is the most optimistic thing I have read in a long time.

You know that definition of a pessimist and optimist, don't you, the one where a pessimist sees the glass of water as half empty, while the optimist sees the same glass as half full. Obviously, you're an optimist, and so do I, at least, I try to be one ;-)

You are welcome. That was the optimistic vision. Pesimists could think that she was so upset for her dream day ending, that she treated her kids bad when she arrived home. Because "life is tough and they have to learn this from early childhood". I don't share this point of view, but I've encountered it a few times.

you're absolutely right about that one, Simonne. Children are the best psychics out there - they can feel when their parents are distressed and they start reacting the same way. So yes, a relaxed mother who allowed herself some pampering is more welcomed by her children, than a mom, who's stressed and spills her anger on kids. Thanks for sharing your observations, Simonne.

I would say that the children still benefited from that. We can imagine that she arrived home and smiled to her kids, and treated them nicely, being still under the influence of her day. And maybe for them this meant more than a new shirt, or a better pair of shoes.
