This clearly displays that Anglo-Saxons are not only non-tolerant of the African race; but towards all others as well.

Hi Julie. This story does teach us a great lesson.
To answer your question - Since the narrator in the story assumed that Mr. Kelada is of oriental decent, he was using rather nationalistic remarks about his character.

This short story give us a good lesson. Tell a lie is not good. but it is very useful if we tell a lie to escape good person or save a situation.

And I don't understand this sentence:"But Mr. Kelada flashed an oriental smile at me". Why "oriental smile"? not "secret smile" or ...

Hi Theodore. Everything you've said made a perfect sense. I think many of us have experienced the same, and you said it really well: <em>"How many times do we win at all cost and really loose." - so true.
Thanks for reading my blog and even enjoying it ;-)</em>

I enjoyed the story very much. I have found myself in situations when discussing something with somebody where they top everything I say with something better. I just let it go, its just not worth it. How many times do we win at all cost and really loose. I hope this made sense probably not. enjoy your blog very much thank you.

I'm really glad you liked it, Joseph and John.

John, thanks for letting me know about the broken link - it's fixed now - simply a link to Maugham on Wikipedia.

Last week I discovered a small bookstore where they sell used books. Unfortunately it's closing down at the end of the month, so they're having a huge Sale, selling books by inches - $2 per inch. I bought three big volumes of great short story collections there. I was running out of time, but planning on going there again before the store closes permanently - such a pity.

So expect more grand stories featured in my lit bits ;-)

Bookstores and me is not a very healthy combination - once I get in, it takes more than a strong willpower to force myself to leave the store without emptying a shelf or two there, it's especially harder to do in stores selling used books.

Delicious! Beautifully crafted.

<blockquote>There is nothing more exasperating when you are playing patience than to be told where to put the card you have turned up before you have a chance to look for yourself.</blockquote>

How very true. I love these little observations in his writing.

ps: your Somerset Maugham link in paragraph 3 isn't working.
