Source Of InspirationI have decided to extend the deadline for my Group Writing Project – for another week.
I’ve had several people who were interested in participating but needed more time to get their entries in.
At this moment I have received 12 submissions (plus mine). If we could double that by May 24 that would be awesome.

I’m not going after a big number of entries. I doubt that aliens would abduct my blog and lure people to submit their inspiration sources with the same enthusiasm they had for Problogger’s group project. But IF that happens then I would get back the control of my blog and stop accepting the entries once I get fifty of them.

I’ve also created a promo image for this group project and placed it on the blog’s sidebar. I know I should’ve done it in the first place, but… Live and learn. You can safely predict that I’m in the process of writing a How-To guide for bloggers on running group writing projects.

There’s something else that I’m planning on doing for this project. Tara from GraphicDesignBlog has suggested to publish an e-book with the project entries. What a great idea, isn’t it? Thus, I’ll be publishing a compilation of the best sources of inspiration from project participants in an e-book. This should be beneficial to everyone – participants, readers and everyone who’s looking for sources of inspiration to help them get motivated in life and work. Please, let me know what you think about the idea of an e-book?

Here are the updated rules for this group writing project:

  1. Write a post on your blog and share with us how you get inspired. There are no topic restrictions. You can write about your biggest source of inspiration for anything you want to, be it for:
    • blogging
    • web&graphic design/programming
    • photography
    • life&work
  2. Contact me with your name, email and a permalink to your post. If you don’t have your own blog, you can always write a guest post on my blog, or simply send me your thoughts by contacting me in person.
  3. Once I collect the links from all participants and publish them on my blog, you can write another post and link to either all or your favourite sources of inspiration suggested by other bloggers.

The deadline is Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I will send you a confirmation email once I get your entry and will publish the complete list with links to all your posts on Saturday, May 26, 2007.

So for those of you who haven’t participated yet, stop procrastinating, dedicate some of your busy time to this project and post/email your sources of inspiration. Many thanks to those who already submitted their sources, you’ve given so many incredible tips and suggestions that I can’t wait to share them with the rest of the blogiverse.

P.S. If you have any other suggestions on how to better promote this group writing project, please share them with me. I would really appreciate that.

21 Insightful Bits in response to “Extended Group Project: Source Of Inspiration”

  1. The e-book is a great idea! I can’t wait to see it and all the inspiration from others. Thanks for putting this together, Vivien!

  2. Bes

Thanks for the notification. I guess I worked so hard last night for nothing? =P j/k. I will probably refine and edit my entry for the next few days until the deadline.

Also, you may want to make sure you let everyone know how their participation will be compiled in an e-book, or to post it in a separate post on your site so that people can know the details like who will be published first, the formatting, the link backs to the authors, sample, etc. Otherwise, some people may object to having being published in any format other than originally promised [in a blog post on your blog]. You may want to ask every participant so far if they agree to the idea. I have to think about this e-book idea too.

Also, to promote this project more, would it be possible to get some more icons in different sizes? Maybe a few more smaller sizes and designs and a few bigger ones, to allow people to choose from more options.

  3. Vivien

I’m sorry, Bes. Only after I published this post I saw your incoming link that you’ve posted the entry to this project on your blog. You were one of the reasons why I extended the deadline. And you definitely didn’t work hard on that post for nothing.

Thank you so very much for your suggestions regarding the e-book and the promo images. I will definitely be asking for everyone’s permission to be included in the e-book and will be emailing everyone the drafts of the e-book prior to the final release.

And I’ll create some more icons for the group project and make them available online.

Everyone else, please let me know what your thoughts are regarding the e-book and the promo images. Thank you all in advance.

  4. Thanks for the extension. I have wanted to participate but I have been really busy. I will get it done by the weekend.

  5. Vivien

Thanks, Joey. I’ve been waiting for your entry as well :-)

  6. Yay!

  7. That ebook idea is really cool.

  8. I like the idea of an e-book. I think it is the first group writing project which will end up in such a way. Even those aliens might like it (in case they abduct your blog :))

  9. I was looking forward to seeing your post…this is like a cliffhanger in a movie, your keeping us waiting :)

The ebook’s an excellent idea – even if I do say so myself ;)

Looking forward to my copy, if the aliens don’t get there first.

    Thanks for the mention too.

  10. I found you through Bes and it was a worthwhile find. Group writing projects are such fun; always full of new people and new ideas. When they’re turned into ebooks, there’s something delightfully permanent about them. Is it ok if I submit (different) posts from both of my blogs?

  11. Vivien

Carolyn, yes you can submit different posts from each of your blogs as long as they talk about your sources of inspiration. I look forward to your entries.

My apologies, Tara, next week I’ll definitely post all the entries to this group project.

Rory, what does that Yay! mean? What are you excited about – the extended deadline or the e-book? :-)

Thanks, Simonne and Shankar for your input on the e-book. So far I’m getting a divided opinion on whether or not the e-book is such a good idea. Some people like it, others don’t.

Since I’ve never published an e-book before, I’d appreciate your input on what kind of complications an e-book could bring (e.g. copyright and legal)? I won’t be making any money on this e-book, since it would be a result of a collaborative effort. However could I and should I include the requirement that other participants are not allowed to sell this e-book either.

I guess once I’ll get all the entries by next Thursday I’ll be contacting every participant personally and asking for his/her opinion regarding the e-book. I will count the votes and make a decision based on what the majority decides. What do you think about it?

  12. Maybe people are a little hesitant because they don’t quite understand what the eBook will look like? I looked it up on Wikipedia and it seems to have many different forms it can take. Have you (or anyone else?) thought about what it will look like? In my mind, it’s a PDF with the entries and maybe a short bio/intro of the author and maybe a few illustrations/photos if those were provided. What is everyone else thinking?

  13. Yes, the e-book is a wonderful idea. I’ll try to write something for this project too. I think it’s a great way to socialise, and always interesting to see so many disparate takes.

    Copyright – Creative Commons?

  14. Hi Vivien

Just done a quick search on ebooks. Looks like there could be some useful articles here

  15. Vivien

Thanks, johno. I’m curious to get into your head too :-)
So is that what you think I should specify for the e-book – CC?

Tara, thanks for the link. I’m printing it out and will read on the weekend.

  16. So long as your contributors are happy with that. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
You won’t find much inside my head;)
Though perhaps my http://mykagawa.com/blog is a little more personal.
    Good night, Vivien.

  17. Vivien

Good night to you, johno. Here the afternoon has just started :-)

Lauren, I was envisioning pretty much the same things as you did for the e-book layout – just putting the posts together in a PDF format, perhaps with a 1-2 sentences of author’s details and the link, and an Index page at the beginning with the list of all the entries and links to each of them.

  18. I love the idea of an ebook! Can’t wait to see all the entries… although I am now feeling I was hurrying up on my entry since I had discovered you just a day or two before the deadline.. :) I am just thankful to be included in your project vivien.. I hope you got my email, if not I would send you some information again..

  19. Vivien

Hi pearl. I did see your entry and commented on it, but I didn’t get your email with the name (not sure if ‘pearl’ is your real name ) to be included with your entry. Could you please, send it to me again? Thank you.
