Digg vs. Reddit vs. StumbleUpon vs. del.icio.us

July 22nd, 2007 :: by Vivien

With so many social networking sites on the Web I’m sure everyone is curious about which one is a better promotional tool for blogs. So far I’ve experienced only the effects of the big four: Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon and del.icio.us. I thought it would be beneficial to share my observations with others.

Learning Things That Captivate

There is an interesting meme going around, asking people “What’s your learning edge?”, started by an intellectual “monk at work” - Adam Kayce. He asks, “Write a post about your “learning edge” and what you’re into these days.”
I’ve read several responses from its participants and feel quite honored to be included in such an erudite group of people (thanks for the tag, Isabella @ Moritherapy).

Who Are The Most Creative People?

CHILDREN.

If I was a child, I would’ve probably stopped here, because there’s nothing else that needs to be said or explained. Simply observe playing children, things they come up with or convert to toys, look at their drawings, listen to their answers to various questions about life, nature, relationship. Often they think of some outstanding solutions to overcome many obstacles that come their way.

I’ve always been fascinated by reading or watching about not necessarily famous but definitely exceptionally interesting people. So it’s not surprising that one of my most favourite channels is Biography, while Wikipedia and Google are the quicker alternatives to books for finding out more about those outstanding people who pique my curiosity.

Flattering Influence

July 6th, 2007 :: by Vivien

It’s in human’s nature to be influenced by our surrounding - news we hear, books/sites we read, art we see, food we eat, friends we hang out with. So it’s not surprising to have people who are aware of this fact and are really good at influencing others. We encounter that pressure everywhere we turn to - just look at those commercials that try so hard to have a big impact on our daily behavior, the news channels that are brainwashing our ability to think for ourselves, the websites that affect our blogging choices.

Behind The Scenes Of Inspiration Bit

Behind The Scenes Of Inspiration Bit
I’m not sure if others experience the same but with me it’s often either nothing or everything. There’s rarely a happy medium between having too many client projects or work at the same time and wondering if my email is working, how come I haven’t heard from anyone for quite awhile.

But even outside of work I encounter the same dilemma: either our phone is silent for days or ringing off the hook all day; either nobody is visiting us for weeks or our doors don’t close from everyday guests.

I’ve been interviewed only once before for a group interview in IT Manager’s journal on FOSS consulting. When all of sudden last week I was interviewed twice for two different blogs.

First Successful Commercial Graphic Designer

June 30th, 2007 :: by Vivien

cheret Before Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Chip Kidd, Milton Glaser and other notable modern graphic designers there was a French artist Jules Chéret, often deservingly called the “father of the modern poster”. His successful venture into commercial art has inspired many artists of XIX century, including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Théophile Steinlen, Leonetto Cappiello and Alfons Mucha, to apply their talent in poster industry.

Musings on Blogging

June 24th, 2007 :: by Vivien

It’s been seven hours and three days since I’ve written a post for my blog. Not because I was lazy, or terribly busy, or didn’t have anything to write about. On the contrary, I’ve been working on three different posts, and they’re consuming quite a lot of my time - putting all the content pieces together, doing the necessary research, and simply deciding how broad or narrow I want my articles to be.

On the other hand, I hate abandoning my blog. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I feel like I’m neglecting my readers by not writing on a more regular basis. And of course, those declining RSS and traffic numbers don’t have a positive effect on my anxiety either.
