Group Project: Source Of Inspiration

May 6th, 2007 :: by Vivien

What do you turn to when you feel mundane? How do you lift your spirits when the work stresses you out? How do you get inspired when you feel passionless? What motivates you to strive for perfection?

Everyone has their source of inspiration and if we share it with each other than each of us can benefit from other helpful resources to add stimulus to our work and boost our imagination.

That’s why I’ve decided to host a group project on InspirationBit and turn it into an actual Oasis of Inspiration. The rules are very simple:

Blog Authority

May 5th, 2007 :: by Vivien

Yesterday when I checked my Technorati ranking I was puzzled to see a new feature, called Authority. I clicked on the question-mark-icon to get the explanation, but it didn’t say anything about it. Bes (during our blog talk on IM) has pointed me to an article that talked about the new Technorati feature. As it turned out Technorati started paying attention to the blog authority last fall already, but I haven’t seen that number displayed in my Technorati profile before.

8 Bits of Truth About Blogging

May 4th, 2007 :: by Vivien

Well, I’ve been tagged twice for the same Meme - “5 Things I Enjoy About Blogging”. First by Bes, The Reasoner, and then by Ronald, Ronalfy. So I better participate now before I get triple tagged. Previously I’ve participated in a meme with a somewhat similar topic: 5 Reasons For Blogging and also wrote about the 8 Things I Wish I Knew About Blogging.

Since I usually arrange my lists with either 8 or 16 bits of data, I’ve decided to slightly alter this meme and give you 5 things I enjoy and 3 things I don’t enjoy about blogging.

16 Best-Loved Font Bits In Web Design

May 3rd, 2007 :: by Vivien

This article is the 2nd one in the Web Design series. It was inspired and partially based on the results of the interviews conducted with 35 web designers by Smashing Magazine.

The first 6 bits of fonts on this list are considered “web-safe” - they’re supported by all major browsers on any platform. The fonts in the following 2 bits come pre-installed on most but not all systems. The fonts in the last 8 bits are mainly used for decorative purposes, and implemented on the Web as sIFR or saved as images.

Information Overload

April 28th, 2007 :: by Vivien

What do you think about this statement: “The more the better”? Do you think it’s always true? I doubt if it is ever true? Even with statements like “the more money you have the better” or “the more friends you have the better”. Money change people, and often not in a good way, and most of us so busy that it would be impossible not to neglect some of our friends. The bloggers might argue “the more RSS subscribers I have the better”. Is it really? That means more responsibility on your shoulders and unless you regularly update your blog with high quality posts that big number can go down very quickly. Well… perhaps this one phrase is an exception to the rule:“the more sites link to my blog the better”. Any other exceptions you can think of?

Of course, it’s better to have “more” than “less”, but I think that moderation is the key here. This one I know for sure is not good for our brain: Too Much Information. Nonetheless for some reason Smashing Magazine contributors keep pumping their readers with the overbearing amount of data. When I first saw their post 35 Designers x 5 Questions I thought what a great idea those guys had to ask certain prominent designers 5 questions about web design. But then why did they have to go overboard with that, and ask Thirty Five designers? And then bragging that they’ve got “175 professional suggestions”. Why not quiz just 5 designers?

8 Strenuous Steps To Get The Ideal Name

April 24th, 2007 :: by Vivien

When last December I’ve finally decided that I’m ready to jump into the blogging ocean and see for myself whether or not I can swim with the sharks for an extended period of time without being eaten by them for the dessert right after my leap, I was faced with a very challenging dilemma: What domain name should I choose for my blog, and how do I actually call it?

It took me three days and three nights (yes, I was even going through some potential name ideas in my dreams) to finally decide on the name that was still available for the domain registration. I’ve even got my husband involved in thinking with me and helping out with the names. Here’s what I was going through:

8 Constructive Bits On Running Blog Contests

April 22nd, 2007 :: by Vivien

When a month ago I’ve announced that I will be participating in the Reader Appreciation Week I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Since I have never ran a blog contest before I had absolutely no clue as to what kind of contests I should run, what rules to set, what prizes to give away and most of all, how to motivate people to not only read my blog but also participate in these contests.

I ended up creating 5 contests on my blog, outfitting each of them with five different rule sets and prizes. As it turned out I didn’t have to go through all those troubles and it would’ve been enough to set just one rule, for example - comment on my blog and each day of the week I’ll randomly pick a winner and award him/her with a different prize. This would’ve been the easiest way to go about running the contests and quite an efficient one, but being a rookie blogger I went down the thorny path and learned my lessons the hard way.
